Speech delivered to the full Council meeting on 21st April 2005
It is pleasing that we have again managed to achieve one of the very lowest levels of Council Tax for any unitary authority.
Even so, this will be of little comfort to those for whom Council Tax has become an all-but unaffordable Labour stealth tax; and although the effect of that Labour policy (which has resulted in a 76% national rise in Council Tax during the Blair years—more than three-quarters as much again as in 1997) is less here in Medway than almost anwhere else in the country, it will still be a heavy financial burden to many on low and fixed incomes.
Thank you Mr Mayor.
John M Ward (Councillor, Rochester South and Horsted)
