Speech delivered to the full Council meeting on 15th June 2006

Thank you Madam Mayor.

I was again pleased to have had a Portfolio Holder come before Finance & Corporate Services Overview and Scrutiny a little while back, Madam Mayor.

Councillor Mrs Bamber dealt with several questions on the Customer First initiative, in which I have taken an interest for some time. Indeed, I visited the Contact Centre only last week, and was very impressed with the set-up and the way its staff and managers handle the whole operation. It really is something of which we can all be proud, Madam Mayor.

The following day, I met a resident who had recently dealt with the Contact Centre, and his comment was that he had dealt with "one of the most polite and most helpful people he had ever spoken to at the council in his forty years living here", and he had a prompt and appropriate result.

To me that truly is the "proof of the pudding", Madam Mayor, and sums up the success of the project that even those among the Members opposite who have been against this huge enhancement of customer service can no longer deny.
