Councillor on Medway Council
Speech delivered to full Council about the Innovation Centre Phase 2

John Ward

Speech delivered to the full Council meeting on 20th April 2007

Thank you, Madam Mayor.

Phase 2 of the excellent Innovation Centre project is most welcome, Madam Mayor, and is a shining example of having one‘s cake and eating it! This Conservative Administration has found a very viable way of providing high-tech employment without having to scrap any existing local facilities.

This goes way beyond the opposition members‘ stated plans for this locality under the Local Plan Policy S11, and Rochester Airport would have been closed and the large grassed area concreted-over. The Innovation Centre is a far more realistic concept of the whole idea, Madam Mayor.

Yes, the original Policy was for a so-called "science and technology park" that research soon showed to be a complete non-starter and would never have come into being.

Madam Mayor, as I said: keeping the airport green and having the Innovation Centre is a real-life example of having one‘s cake and eating it. This latest development puts the icing on that cake!

Thank you very much, Madam Mayor.
