Speech delivered at the full Council meeting on 2nd November 2006
Thank you, Madam Mayor, members.
I remember Councillor Chishti bringing forward this idea at our party‘s conference just a few weeks ago, Madam Mayor, and I thought then that it had merit.
Indeed, I suspect that it was probably only the runaway success of "Mister Light Bulb Man" that meant that this wasn‘t voted the outright winner there and then. But the light bulb chappie was from Asda Head Office, and we Asda folk (or, in my case, former Asda Greeter) are known to be tough acts to follow!
Councillor Chishti did well in presenting his case and defending and elaborating on it when questioned, Madam Mayor, and—especially knowing how serious and deadly an issue this truly is—I feel strongly inclined to support it tonight, especially because of the deterrent effect it would surely have, plus taking many of the most consistently dangerous drivers off the roads for a decent length of time.
Along with numerous others in this Chamber, Madam Mayor, I greatly respect Councillor Chishti‘s knowledge of the courts and the legal system in this country, and believe that he has devised what is probably the most practical, reasonable and fair system possible for dealing with this very serious subject, which is certainly a sizeable issue here in Medway.
I support the Motion.
Thank you very much, Madam Mayor.
John M Ward (Councillor, Rochester South and Horsted)
