Speech delivered to the full Council meeting on 2nd November 2006
Thank you Madam Mayor.
I substituted at the Community Services meeting that looked at this petition regarding the wanted wheel park at Jackson‘s Fields. I have been puzzled and dismayed, Madam Mayor, at the spoke put into the wheels by a Labour Councillor (Cllr Mrs Murray) who actively opposed having this here, despite overwhelming support for it at Development Control when it came before them last December, and where once again I was substituting.
I checked out the temporary facility in August of last year, Madam Mayor, accompanied by Councillor Mrs Haydock, and even took a photograph of that admittedly rather rattly set-up. We could not even hear it until we were really close, Madam Mayor, and well away from any road, so how anyone in City Way could possibly have heard anything is way beyond belief.
Thus I cannot understand Councillor Mrs Murray‘s objection to having a permanent facility there. Such a concrete wheel park would make even less noise, so where was the problem? Far from her claim at the Scrutiny Committee meeting of simply wanting the exact position of the wheel park amended, her strong push at Development Control previously had been for it not to go on Jackson's Fields at all, but rather a long way away, on the Esplanade!
Just for the record, Madam Mayor, I have supported this project right from the start, and am disgusted that for some unaccountable reason any of the local Labour members ever even considered opposing this facility on Jackson's Fields.
Thank you very much, Madam Mayor.
John M Ward (Councillor, Rochester South and Horsted)
