Martian Successor Nadesico

(Sometimes better known as "Mobile Battleship Nadesico")

This hugely entertaining—and sometimes serious—Japanese animation series is sufficiently daft to be enjoyable by almost anyone. It has become one of the most appreciated anime series of recent years in Japan, the USA and several other countries. It is now being shown here in Britain on the Sci-Fi Channel as part of the Saiko-Exciting programme on Saturday mornings.
With its daffy captain and mostly idiotic crew, all is set fair for some comic encounters as the Nadesico takes on the Jovian Lizards who are attacking Earth's Martian colonies.

RuriThere is one notable exception to the lunacy of the crew and their actions: eleven-year-old Ruri, a child genius who seems to be the only sane member of the ship's crew. Ruri, genetically-engineered and later sold to the conglomerate who made the Nadesico, realises how stupid the others are and has no hesitation in calling them "Baka!" (idiots!) on numerous occasions. Ruri is just about always serious, usually looks sad, is very appealing, and is far and away the most popular character of the series with its fans, including me. Her personality is refreshing in a story of this kind, and is a perfect counter-balance to the other crew members' behaviour.
